The Minority Leader Afenyo Markin’s call on Civil Society Organisations, the Judiciary and Ghanaians in general to stand up against the impending removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo isn’t just unnecessary but also hypocritical. Though the decision to remove the Chief Justice is scary and very dangerous to our democracy, it is important to note that we are where we are today as a result of similar acts and precedents set by the NPP government when they were in power.
When the former president Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo decided to remove the Charllotte Osei as the chairperson of the electoral commission upon assuming office in 2017, there were calls from many Ghanaians that such an action was going to set a bad precedent for future governments but they didn’t listen. The NPP supported the then president to successfully remove the chairperson.
As if that wasn’t enough, they again supported the former president to remove the former Auditor General Daniel Yao Domelevo from office by forcing him to go on an early retirement. A decision that was widely condemned by many Ghanaians. The reckless actions of the NPP government eroded the gains that were made by Ghana since the beginning of the fourth republic. They basically sent Ghana back to the “stone age”.
Should the current government succeed in removing the chief justice from office, Ghanaians must hold Nana Akufo Addo and the NPP responsible. The seed that they planted and nursed has grown and about bear bitter fruits for Ghanaians to chew. So Afenyo Markins and the entire NPP caucus should do self-retrospection before coming in front of Ghanaians next time asking us to stand up against the wild animal they introduce us too.
