The recent shooting in the Ashanti Region has laid bare the growing danger of illegal mining, locally known as galamsey. Police officers, carrying out their lawful duty, confronted armed resistance that quickly turned violent. Gunshots rang out, lives were affected, and fear gripped the community. This was not an isolated incident — it reflects a pattern in galamsey-dominated areas.Illegal miners arm themselves, mobilise youth, and openly challenge state authority to protect their operations. They turn environmental crime into a serious security threat and force communities to live under constant tension. Every clash weakens public trust and endangers both civilians and security personnel. This incident proves that galamsey destroys more than rivers and forests — it fuels violence and costs lives. Ghana must confront illegal mining with decisive law enforcement, strong community involvement, and sustained political will before the situation spirals further out of control.
