Sam George Reveals How MoMo Scammers Defrauded His Mother of GH¢24,000

In a shocking revelation that underscores the growing threat of digital fraud in Ghana, Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that his own mother fell victim to a mobile money (MoMo) scam—losing a staggering GH¢24,000 to fraudsters.

Speaking of JoyNews’ PM Express, the outspoken legislator shared the heartbreaking story to emphasize the urgency of addressing cyber fraud in the country.

“In my poor mother’s case, just after I was appointed as a minister, they called her and said, ‘Oh, because of your son, now we want to protect your mobile money and so verify your pin. They stole GH¢24,000 from her wallet. When she told me, I asked why she did not call me to confirm,” he stated.

Sam George used the moment to call for stronger cybersecurity frameworks, increased public awareness, and swift action from telecom companies and financial institutions. He also emphasized the need for citizens to stay vigilant, verify calls and messages before acting, and report suspicious activities. As MoMo becomes an integral part of daily transactions, the call for stronger security protocols has never been louder.

This unfortunate experience, while personal, serves as a public wake-up call: anyone can be a target, and awareness is the first step toward protection.
