Top Contenders for NPP’s 2028 Presidential Race: Who Leads the Pack?

As Ghana’s political landscape heats up ahead of the 2028 general election, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) appears to have its front-runner clearly defined. Recent polls by Global InfoAnalytics reveal that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer, remains the most preferred candidate to lead the NPP once again. With about 57% support among NPP members and sympathizers, Bawumia’s experience, digital governance record, and economic expertise continue to strengthen his position.

Following him closely is Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the outspoken former Assin Central MP, who commands about 29% of support. His boldness and populist appeal make him a credible challenger, though the gap between him and Bawumia remains wide.

Other names emerging in the conversation include Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the former Education Minister known for his educational reforms; Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture; and Kwabena Agyapong, a former NPP General Secretary. However, these figures currently hold single-digit support in national polls.

Analysts note that while Bawumia’s dominance is evident, factors such as delegate mobilisation, regional backing, and campaign narratives could still reshape the contest. The race is expected to intensify as the NPP seeks a candidate who can not only unite the party but also win national confidence in 2028.
